Training Course to be a Certified Physiotherapist with the opportunity of a double-qualification for Bachelor of Physiotherapy, NL

In 1998, the Hogeschool Zuyd in Heerlen introduced a new teaching method for the physiotherapist training - Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Based on this training method, the Physiotherapy Teaching Institute, Kerpen (near Cologne) and the Hogeschool Zuyd, Heerlen (near Aachen) are co-operating to implement a joint training that offers a double qualification:

  • to train students during a 3-year period to be physiotherapists according to German Law (MPhG), with the title of Staatlich geprüfte/r Physiotherapeut/in (Certified Physiotherapist), and

  • to train the same students during another year to be Bachelor of Physiotherapy, NL according to Dutch legislation.

The focus of the training lies in the first three years to be done in Kerpen; the fourth year is done in Heerlen.

During the three-year physiotherapist training at the Präha Physiotherapy Teaching Institute, Kerpen, the students may register themselves in the 3rd year as students of the University of Applied Sciences in Heerlen, the Netherlands. This is required, if after the German physiotherapy state examination the student wants to acquire the Dutch degree of the University of applied sciences to be a Bachelor of Physiotherapy, NL during another year of studies. For this additional 4th year in Heerlen, the student will have to pay separate tuition fees. There are the specific conditions for the 3rd year of training at the Präha Physiotherapy Teaching Institute, Kerpen, with simultaneous registration at the University of Applied Sciences in Heerlen, the Netherlands.

Groups of Training Occupations for Academically Trained Physiotherapists

Besides the outpatient practices, sports and rehabilitation institutions, the clinics as well as the educational institutes where physiotherapists are employed today, academically trained physiotherapists will be presented a lot of chances, especially regarding a senior position and/or scientific working in the fields of employment mentioned above. Senior positions in professional associations, health insurance schemes and the industry are further perspectives of professional activities. This is the only degree that gives physiotherapists the chance to work on an international basis.
